Mode Control Panel (MCP) provides control of the Autopilot, Flight Director, Altitude Alert and Autothrottle System.
The MCP is used to select and activate Autopilot Flight Director System (AFDS) modes and establish altitudes, speeds and
climb/descent profiles.

Auto Pilot (A/P) Switches and Light
Engage the autopilot above 50 feet radio altitude.
- A/P Engage Switch - When pushed:
- If either flight director switch is ON, the autopilot engages in the selected flight director mode(s).
- If both flight director switches are OFF, the autopilot engages in:
- Heading Hold (HDG HOLD) or Track Hold (TRK HOLD) as the roll mode, and
- Vertical speed (V/S) or flight path angle (FPA) as the pitch mode.
- A/P Engage Light - Indicates all operating autopilots are engaged.
F/D Switch
The left Flight Director switch activates the command bars on the left PFD and the right Flight Director switch does the same for the right PFD.
- ON
- On the ground with both Flight Director switches OFF, the first Flight Director switch positioned ON arms the Flight Director in the takeoff go-around (TO/GA) roll and pitch modes. The flight
mode annunciation appears on both PFDs. Positioning the second switch ON displays the command bars on the second PFD.
- In flight, with the autopilot disengaged and both flight director switches OFF, the first Flight Director switch positioned to ON engages the Flight Director in:
- Heading Hold (HDG HOLD) or Track HOLD (TRK HOLD) as the roll mode, and
- Vertical speed (V/S) or flight path angle (FPA) as the pitch mode.
- In flight, with the autopilot engaged and both Flight Director switches OFF, the first Flight Director switch positioned to ON engages the Flight Director in the currently selected autopilot
mode(s).
- OFF
- Command bars are not displayed.
- Command bars are displayed on PFDs if a TO/GA switch is pushed when airspeed is greater than 80 knots on takeoff, or on go-around with the flaps not retracted.
Autothrottle ARM Switches
Left and Right autothrottle ARM switch controls respective engine autothrottle.
- ARM - Arm respective autothrottle for mode engagement. Selected autothrottle engages automatically when AFDS mode is selected.
- OFF
- Disconnects selected autothrottle.
- Prevents selected autothrottle engagement
CLB/CON Switch
On the ground and below 400 feet during takeoff, the switch is inoperative. Pushing this switch is the normal method to reduce thrust after takeoff or go-around when VNAV is not engaged. When pushed:
- With two engines operating, changes the engine thrust limit to the FMC selected climb thrust.
- With only one engines operating, changes the thrust limit to maximum continuous (CON).
Autothrottle Engage Switch and Light
- Autothrottle Switch - Push-above 400 feet, with autothrottle armed, engages appropriate autothrottle mode for selected AFDS pitch mode, or if no pitch mode, in speed (SPD) mode.
- Autothrottle Light - Indicates autothrottle engage mode is selected.
IAS/MACH Reference Switch
Push:
- Alternately changes IAS/MACH window between IAS and MACH displays
- Inoperative when IAS/MACH window is blank.
IAS/MACH Window
- Displays speed selected by IAS/MACH selector.
- Blank when FMC controls speed. When changing from TO/GA to V/S, FPA or ALT windows displays:
- Flap placard speed minus 5 knots (flaps extended).
- 250 knots (flaps up)
- Pilot selected speed entered since last time TO/GA was pushed.
- Display range is:
- 100 - 399 KIAS
- 0.4 - 0.95 MACH
- Selected speed is displayed as PFD selected speed.
- Displays 200 knots when power is first applied.
- During climb, automatically changes from MACH to IAS at 0.83 MACH.
- During descent, automatically changes from MACH to IAS at 310 KIAS.
IAS/MACH Selector
- Rotate
- Sets speed in IAS/MACH window and on PFD as selected speed.
- Inoperative when IAS/MACH window is blank.
- Push
- In VNAV mode, alternately changes IAS/MACH window between blank didplay and display of FMC computed target speed.
- When window blanks, FMC sets speed.
- Blanks when not in SPD, FLCH or TO/GA.
FLCH Switch & Light
- FLCH SPD is displayed on PFD pitch flight mode annunciator as pitch mode.
- If IAS/MACH window is blank, IAS/MACH window opens FMC target speed, if valid. If not valid, IAS/MACH window opens to current speed.
- Autothrottle automatically engages.
- FLCH Light - Indicates FLCH mode is engaged.
VNAV Switch & Light
- Arms, engages or disarms VNAV as pitch mode.
- Displays VNAV in white (armed) on PFD pitch flight mode annunciator below 400 feet.
- VNAV engages above 400 feet radio altitude.
- VNAV Light - Indicates VNAV mode is armed or engaged.
LNAV Switch & Light
- Arms, engages or disarms LNAV as roll mode.
- Displays LNAV in white (armed) on PFD rollflight mode annunciator when armed.
- LNAV engages if airplane is above 50 feet radio altitude, within 2.5nm of active leg, and within path capture parameters of ground speed, intercept angle and bank angle, to active leg.
- LNAV Light - Indicates LNAV mode is armed or engaged.
AutoPilot Disengage Bar
- Down:
- Disconnects all three autopilots.
- Prevents autopilot engagement.
- Exposes amber and black stripes.
- Turns on the master warning lights.
- Displays EICAS warning message.
- Sounds aural warning.
- Disables bank angle protection.
- UP:
- Permits autopilot engagement.
- Hides amber and black stripes.
Cabin Light Sensor
This sensor checks the ambient light in the cockpit then adjusts all of the cabin display lights accordingly.
Heading (HDG) / Tracking (TRK) Window
- Displays selected Heading or Track.
- Selected Heading or Track is displayed on PFD an ND.
- If approach is armed, Heading/Track in MCP window automatically changes to selected ILS front course Heading at LOC capture.
Heading (HDG) / Tracking (TRK) Switch
Alternately changes Heading/Track window, PFD and ND references between Heading and Track.
Heading / Track HOLD Switch and Light
- HOLD Switch
- Selects Heading HOLD (HDG HOLD) or Track HOLD (TRK HOLD) as roll mode.
- Displays HDG HOLD or TRK HOLD on PFD roll flight mode annunciator.
- AFDS commands wings level and holds Heading or Track established at wings level.
